When you were born in the City and raised in Deacons Farm, Its almost a given that you will be a fan or player of either cricket, football, basketball or road tennis..or all of the above. Growing up as a young man I was no exception, Sports was my World….Many a days I spent on the cricket pitch, football field (any and every piece of real estate we could find) and the basketball and road tennis courts, unmoved by the scorching sun which strangely never was hot to us…not once we were outside.
This is the background in which I grew up….Raised and mentored by sportsmen of the highest order, Ricky “Laker” Williams (Football Pro), Carlisle Best (W.I Cricket star/Draughts enthusiast), Pearce Adamson to name a few. These were the community heroes of my time. The men who every young boy in the hood wanted to be like when they grew up. All talented sportsmen.
Road tennis was the first sport I was introduced to ( my mother being a former champion) and while I hardly play now, I’ve been a huge fan since ..like forever. When on the Deacons Hard Courts nicknames like “Limp”, “Tiny”, “Fly”, ” Dabo”, “Burrah”, Michael Jackson,”Pa” , “Charlesie” and “Lil Man” were veritable Lords of the Road and drew crowds by the hundreds to witness their battles. Many weekly wages were won and lost on the side bets in those days. My first bet was a win…but that’s subject for another “blogory” PS: My own word..I figure if Donald Trump can boast about doing things “Bigly”…then I can tell my story in a Blog…hence “Blogory” .lol
I reminisced to back then to fast-forward to present day. For tonight I witnessed the best of the new guard of Road Tennis -Mark “Venom” Griffith ( for all intents and purposes let’s call him Bashment Soca) coming up against one of the stalwarts of the sport , the exciting, Antoine “Lil Man” Daniel. (The more flamboyant of the two who definitely can be compared to a strong, punchy Social commentary).
We all expected a battle Royale..with the sentimental majority of the thousands of fans on hand hoping that Antoine could pull it off but in the end, Youth came out on top of experience and Venom drove away with a brand new motorcar. A prize unprecedented in the sport. Congrats also go out to Kim Holder who won the women’s Single title..and a cool 10K cheque for her skilful efforts.
Kudos to Dale Clarke and The Professional Road Tennis Association for a job well done. Yes the sound system/DJ presented major challenges for my live performance but as an entertainer your back must be broad…all gigs are not perfect and I know it will be improved in the future…that’s the nature of us Farmers.
What was perfect was the tennis. And that’s what it was all about
Not necessarily about the Soca Junkie…who is and will always be a True Road Tennis fan
Well done guys
Indeed Road Tennis won tonight.
